Politicians, businessmen, journalists and society in general all appeal to self-regulation when talking about the ethics of the media. But what is self-regulation and what mechanisms exist to put it into practice? In 'Responsible communication. Deontology and self-regulation of the media '(Barcelona, 1999) I have studied all the self-regulation mechanisms that can be applied in the media (codes, editorial statutes, style books, advice, etc.). Each of them addresses its history, its functions, its scope, etc. The following text includes -with some modifications to shorten its length- the section of the book dedicated to the ombudsman, in which its role in promoting journalistic ethics and deontology is discussed.
