European cinema in the languages of stateless and small nations

Abstract

This article deals with the recent incorporation within the field of academic reflection bearing a variety of terms – the cinema of small nations, identity, in minority/minorised languages; the reconceptualisation of the term national cinema, which is symptomatic of the multiplicity of practices of surviving languages; and a discussion of EU policy on two fronts, linguistic and film. Method. This point relates to measures dealing with original version and original version with subtitles and the difficult political transformation in cultural, identity and ideological issues, forged over long periods, which exceed the constitution of the European Union. The way in which they are handled politically, in the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages, or in a presentation by the Committee on Culture and Education to the European Parliament, is limited and paradoxical. Results and Discussion. Finally, we will contrast EU policy with recent institutional policies in Galicia, Wales and Finland.

Margarita Ledo Andión, University of Santiago de Compostela

Margarita Ledo Andión has a PhD in Information Sciences from the Autonomous University of Barcelona. She is a writer and filmmaker and holds the Chair of Audiovisual Communication at the University of Santiago de Compostela.

She coordinates the Group for Audiovisual Studies: content, formats and technology (G.I. 1786) at the University of Santiago de Compostela and has been the lead researcher in the following state-funded research projects (I+D+i) among others: “Towards the European Digital Space: the role of small cinemas in original version” (MINECO, ref. CSO2012-35784), “Cinema, Diversity and Networks (MINECO, ref. CSO2009-13702)”, and “Lusofonía: Interactivity and interculturality” (Xunta de Galicia, ref. INCITE08PXIB212124PR).

Her recent publications include: “Entre –fonteiras: o cinema como lugar xeopolítico” (2015) published in Lusofonía e interculturalidade, edited by Moisés de Lemos Martins and “El cuerpo, esa insoportable lengua comunal”, published in El tratamiento informativo de la violencia contra las mujeres (2015), a study coordinated by Inmaculada Postigo and Ana Jorge Alonso in the collection Cuadernos Artesanales de Comunicación (Latina).

She is president of the Federação Lusófona de Ciencias da Comunicação (LUSOCOM), first vice-president of the Asociación Española de Investigación en Comunicación (AE-IC), and vice-president of the Asociación Iberoamericana de Comunicación (ASSIBERCOM).

Antía María López Gómez, University of Santiago de Compostela

Antía Maria López Gómez has a PhD in Communication Sciences from the Complutense University of Madrid. She is Professor of Audiovisual Communication and Publicity at the Faculty of Communication Sciences of the University of Santiago de Compostela.

Her publications include the monographs Políticas de comunicación e identidad cultural: estrategias gubernamentales sobre la comunicación social (2007) and La dimensión de lo axiológico en el discurso del spot publicitario (2003).

She is a member of the Group for Audiovisual Studies: content, formats and technology (USC- G.I. 1786) and of the research team in the research project “Towards the European Digital Space: the role of small cinemas in original version” (MINECO, ref. CSO2012-35784).

Marta Pérez Pereiro, University of Santiago de Compostela

Marta Pérez Pereiro has a PhD in Communication Sciences from the University of Santiago de Compostela and graduated in Communication Studies from the University of South Wales.

She is Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Communication Sciences of the University of Santiago de Compostela.

Her research focuses on fictional television programming and studies on humour. Her recent publications include “The public and the journalists' views on the humoristic treatment of religion in Spain” in Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly and “Maybe your story is not different from mine: Memory, history and progress in the Galician series Libro de Familia” in International Journal of Iberian Studies.

She is a member of the Group for Audiovisual Studies: content, formats and technology (USC- G.I. 1786) and of the research team in the research project “Towards the European Digital Space: the role of small cinemas in original version” (MINECO, ref. CSO2012-35784).
