Abstract

A previous issue of the journal Latina (February 1998) included an article on the Canarian newspaper library at the University of La Laguna, which is now complemented by an analysis of the other important newspaper libraries on the islands. The Canary Islands have important newspaper libraries which have saved the collection of periodicals from the islands. The newspaper library of the Museo Canario in Las Palmas has more than 1,000 titles of periodicals, and the best collection of newspapers from Palmas is to be found in the Sociedad Cosmológica in Santa Cruz de La Palma. The Municipal Newspaper Library of Santa Cruz has some 500 titles and the complete collection of the Semanario Misceláneo, the first newspaper on the islands. As we have already seen, the University of La Laguna also has one of the most important newspaper collections on the islands; despite this, knowledge of the documentary and newspaper collections is limited, with scarce and unreliable catalogues.
