Resignificar la periferia urbana: La ficción televisiva como herramienta de patrimonialización

Abstract

Introduction: The representation of social housing neighbourhoods in Spanish television fiction has evolved from approaches centred on marginality towards more complex narratives that explore the social, cultural and emotional dynamics of contemporary urban life. Methodology: This study analyses the television series Entrevías, aired by Telecinco between 2022 and 2024, from a heritage perspective, through an interdisciplinary literature review grounded in cultural studies and urban sociology, combined with a qualitative narrative and discursive analysis of the series as a case study, using categories such as collective memory, the representation of urban space, and processes of territorial stigmatisation. Results: The analysis reveals that the series constructs an ambivalent narrative that, whilst depicting structural problems such as precarity and exclusion, simultaneously presents the neighbourhood as living heritage through the valorisation of community ties and everyday forms of resistance. Discussion: These findings support an understanding of television fiction as a cultural device of symbolic resignification that expands the notion of heritage beyond architectural monumentality. Conclusions: Contemporary fiction can function as an instrument of heritage communication, contributing to the integration of urban margins into the collective imagination and reaffirming their human and cultural value.

Author Biographies

Daniel Navas Carrillo, Universidad de Málaga

Senior Lecturer in Urban Planning and Spatial Planning and Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Postgraduate Studies and University-Specific Courses at the University of Málaga. PhD in Architecture with an International Distinction and an Extraordinary Award. Member of the Heritage and Urban and Territorial Development in Andalusia Research Group (HUM700) and of the University Institute for Habitat, Territory and Digitalisation (iHTD). Secretary of the Association of Professors of Urban Planning and Spatial Planning (AUOT) and member of the board of directors of the University Network for Postgraduate Studies and Continuing Education (RUEPEP).

His research focuses on urban regeneration, taking an integrated approach to the urban, architectural and social dimensions that characterise it, with the aim of contributing to the development of more balanced and sustainable urban models that promote lower resource consumption in the current context of the climate crisis. This line of work has been carried out in collaboration with the Fundación Renovables, with funding secured through public calls for proposals from the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge. His work also explores the social dimension of urban phenomena, including socio-spatial processes such as gender-related studies.

He has undertaken international research stays at Delft University of Technology (12 months), the University of Lisbon (4 months) and the Technical University of Munich (3 months). He has participated in research projects (including as principal investigator) funded by the State R&D&I Plan, the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, and the Regional Government of Andalusia. He has published numerous high-impact works, including journal articles, book chapters and conference papers, and has also served as an editor on several books. His contributions have received several awards: the IUACC Award (2020), the TechnoHeritage Investigator Award (2019), the Kora Award (2017) and the Biennial Award for Urban Planning and Architecture (2016).

He has taught on various undergraduate and postgraduate programmes at the Universities of Seville and Málaga. He has also been a visiting lecturer at other international universities, such as the University of the Algarve and Delft University of Technology. He has held management roles as Deputy Secretary for International Outreach at the Málaga School of Architecture (2021–2024), Deputy Head of the Department of In-House Programmes and Entrepreneurship at the Seville School of Architecture (2017–2022) and at the Technical Secretariat of the Master’s in Architecture and Historical Heritage (2016–2022). He has also served as a member of assessment panels for ANECA’s ACREDITA Programme (2021–2022) and as an external evaluator of research projects for the General Secretariat for Housing of Andalusia (2020–2021).

Heechang Chae, Universidad de Málaga

He holds a degree in Architecture from the University of Seville and is a pre-doctoral researcher (FPU) in the Area of Urban Planning and Spatial Planning (Department of Art and Architecture) at the University of Málaga. He is also a member of the research group ‘Urban Planning, Tourism, Landscape and Architectural Innovation (UTOPIA)’ (HUM-969) and of the Institute for Research into Habitat, Territory and Digitalisation (iHDT).

His research focuses on the study of the territory and contemporary urban transformations, with particular attention to the phenomenon of shrinking cities in southern Europe. His research examines the processes underlying this phenomenon and strategies for urban regeneration in medium-sized cities in Spain, Italy and Portugal, contributing to an understanding of the territorial dynamics linked to sustainability and adaptive planning.

He is involved in several institutional and regional research projects related to urban regeneration processes, as well as national-level knowledge transfer contracts funded by the Fundación Renovables, focusing on the development of methodologies applied to municipal adaptation to climate change, multivariate analysis of hydrological factors, and the sustainable regeneration of neighbourhoods aimed at decarbonisation and the energy transition.

At an international level, his research has been enriched by a research visit to South Korea (2025), where he has conducted an in-depth study of urban contraction dynamics in East Asia through literature reviews, interviews with experts and field visits. This experience has broadened the comparative dimension of his research and facilitated the creation of academic collaboration networks.
