Abstract

With the referendum called by President Rafael Correa in 2011, concludes a complex stage in the history of Ecuador, to take the financial power out of media ownership by law, supported by ratification at the polls. Through twelve years of intense fighting since 1999, when the banking crisis were to indicate its decisive presence in the media landscape of the country, two distinct phases can be described: one between 1999–2006, a period in which the Bank, despite its internal crisis – or by itself, using newspapers, radio and television to wash his image, is expanding its presence in the mainstream media, and another, since 2007, of high interest and very novel, in which political power acts intensively to remove that presence.
