The delete in sound with respect to the image (overlapping) is an expressive resource of the audiovisual editing that is frequently used by directors to introduce a new or relevant action into the story being told. Nevertheless, there are no empirical studies that state this effect as a consequence of the overlapping. In this article, we carry out a qualitative study of 235 overlappings from sequences of films, news and TV commercials, retrieved in the Internet. As a result, we note a use of the overlapping as a coherent semantic structure defining this sort of messages, and a casual relation between variation of intensity of sound and emotional responses such as surprise. This conclusion can be very useful for the development of a method of analysis and the improvement of the audiovisual discourses efficacy based upon emotional stimuli; likewise, this can be very handful for the design of efficient postproduction systems of sound and video.
