Use of Twitter in MOOCs: New ways of youth interaction and their influence on learning

Abstract

This article analyzes the new forms of interaction of young people within a non-formal learning environment, in teaching through MOOC. The objective is to identify how feedback that is given through Twitter influences students' learning. Methodology: first, we carried out a multiple regression analysis to determine which factors have the greatest effect on learning and, subsequently, to determine the extent to which feedback, both given and received, influences different variables: commitment, motivation, participation, enjoyment / satisfaction, self-assessment and learning outcomes, by contrasting means by segments. Results: it is verified that giving feedback through Twitter positively influences learning, while receiving it passively does not obtain conclusive results. Discussion and Conclusions: both the motivation and participation of students and the satisfaction with the use of the Twitter dialogue have a positive effect on learning.

Author Biographies

Carmen Marta-Lazo, Universidad of Zaragoza

Currently she is Professor of Audiovisual Communication and Advertising at the University of Zaragoza. Director of University Radio (Radio.Unizar.es), institutional station of the University of Zaragoza, and President of the Research Commission of ARU (Association of University Radios of Spain).

Principal Investigator of the Research Group in Communication and Digital Information (GICID) of the University of Zaragoza, recognized as a reference group, by the Government of Aragon with the code S29_17R, within the area of Social Sciences (Resolution BOA: 27/03 / 2018) and subsidized by the European Social Fund.

She has worked as a Professor at the Complutense University (1996-2005), at the Francisco de Vitoria University (2004-2005) and at the San Jorge University (2005-2009). She has been a visiting professor and researcher at U.Tübingen (Germany), U. Porto and U. do Minho (Portugal), U. de Bordeaux and CCI de Nîmes (France), U. de Córdoba (Argentina), ININCO (Venezuela) , UNAD (Colombia) and at the Sorbonne University (France). She is guest Professor in the Master of Communication and Audiovisual Education of the International University of Andalusia; of the Official Master of Communication and Education in the Network: of the Information Society to the Knowledge Society of the UNED and of the Master in Information Consultancy and Digital Communication of UZ.

She is co-editor and Editorial Secretary of the Mediterranean Magazine of Communication and member of the Scientific Committee of Latina Magazine, Enl@ce, Icon 14, @tic, Ámbitos, Pangea, Novarum, among others.

She has written more than a hundred publications among books, chapters and articles in indexed journals. Among them, she highlights "Digital Communication. Diana Valero-Errazu, Antonio de Nebrija University

She is currently associate professor in the Master's Degree in Information and Communication Technologies for Education and Digital Learning (Antonio de Nebrija University).

PhD in Sociology of Public and Social Policies from the University of Zaragoza. She has participated in international and national research projects and conducted research stays, among others, in the USA (Harvard Graduate School of Education) and Mexico (Instituto Tecnológico de Monterrey).

She is Secretary of the International Journal of Sociology of Education (RISE) and a collaborating member of the Research Group of Studies on the Risk Society of the University of Zaragoza, recognized as a reference group by the Government of Aragon within the area of Sciences Social and subsidized by the European Social Fund.

José Antonio Gabelas Barroso, Zaragoza University

Associate Professor of Audiovisual Communication and Advertising of the University of Zaragoza. Doctor in Information Sciences from the Complutense University of Madrid. Bachelor in Art History and Diploma in Basic General Education from the University of Zaragoza. He is a visiting professor of the Official Master of Communication and Education in the Network: of the Information Society to the Knowledge Society of the UNED and of the Master in Information Consultancy and Digital Communication of UZ. He has been invited professor of the Master Social Networks and Digital Learning at the UNED.

In the eighties began the didactic of education for the media with the group Spectus, whose members designed one of the first edu-communicatives web pages in Spanish language, published the first book written in Spanish for media education in compulsory education, " Television in the educational center" with a school book for the student and a guide for the teacher, edited by the Ministry of Education and Culture of Spain and Ed. de la Torre. Subsequently, in 2004 we published "Masks and mirages. An approach to media impact ". From 1998 to 2007 he directed the collection "Communication and Media", in the “El Periódico del estudiante” project that he coordinated, sponsored by the Government of Aragón. From 2001 to the present he has collaborated in the training and research of the Cinema and Health program, and its subprogram, Healthy Screens, of the Government of Aragon.

During the last forty years he has developed a professional activity in four areas: the training of trainers with social media and social networks; research about media, in R + D + I projects (Spanish and international); the production of didactic resources in media competitions; finally, the design and coordination of innovation projects in secondary education and higher education.

I have taught at the UOC and the UNED. He has been a research member of CONINCOM, "Conflict, Childhood and Communication", an interdisciplinary team whose objective is to study the media's treatment of conflicts and violence.

Currently, he is a founding member of the group GICID (Research Group in Communication and Digital Information) of the University of Zaragoza. Coordinator of the TRICLab platform, deputy director of the Entremedios platform of the Degree in Journalism. Columnist in the opinion diary Disidentia. He has written more than sixty articles and chapters in specialized magazines and publishers. Since 2007 he is editor of the blog "Cristal Rooms" and has collaborated with more than sixty articles on the INED21 platform.
