Abstract

The study discusses the use of Twitter in politics and its evolution towards a communicative model based more on image than content. Method. This research makes a qualitative analysis that aims images published in the social network Twitter by major Spanish political parties and leaders, during the debate the state of the nation held between 24 and 25 February 2015. Results. The data show a progressive increase in political communication images on Twitter and view their categories. Conclusions. The study states that the images are more important than the text itself. In many cases, the image is now the main vehicle for political communication.

Author Biographies

Francisco Javier Ruiz del Olmo, University of Málaga

Associate Professor at the University of Malaga, his teaching and investigating work takes place at the Colleges of Communication Science and Fine Arts.

He has investigated communicational models and contemporary forms of media, as well as technical and social uses of these; a second research line that he carries out is related to communication and new media. Both lines of work have in common the priority interest in qualitative methodology in audio-visual analysis.

He is part of the project of investigation of the State Programme of Development of Scientific Investigation and Excelence Technic (Programa Estatal de Fomento de la Investigación Científica y Técnica de Excelencia), Relaciones transnacionales en el cine digital iberoamericano (since 2015, Ref. CSO2014-52750-P). Also part of the group PAI Cibercultura, procesos comunicativos y medios audiovisuales (since 2009, Junta de Andalucía).

He has carried out studies related to qualitative analysis of social use of new media (2015, 2014); about experiences of transmission of images at the beginning of radio broadcasting in Spain (2014); images at its presence in published texts in scientific magazines in the communicational field (2013); or about film language (2010). He has published articles in scientific magazines as ComunicarEstudios del Mensaje PeriodísticoHistoria y Comunicación SocialZer o Anàlisi, among others.

Member of the recent PhD Intercollegiate of Communication (Doctorado Interuniversitario de Comunicación), formed by investigators of the Universities of Cadiz, Huelva, Malaga and Seville.

Javier Bustos Díaz, University of Málaga

Investigator enrolled in the PhD Intercollegiate of Communication (Doctorado Interuniversitario de Comunicación) (Universities of Cádiz, Huelva, Malaga and Seville). Graduated in Journalism (2012) and Master of Investigation of Journalistic Communication (2013).

His line of research is focused on the analysis of new forms of political communication, among which are social networks in general and Twitter in particular.

In this sense, he has participated in international congresses about so said theme, and has publish various texts in scientific magazines such as Historia y Comunicación Social, beside of chapters of books in various publishers such as McGraw Hill, among others.
