Framing theory and proto-journalism: A study of the attributes associated with the character of Magellan in the diaries of Pigafetta and Francisco Albo

Abstract

Introduction: This research is focused on analyzing the main features and attributes of Magallanes during the circumnavigation of the globe according to Pigafetta’s and Francisco Albo diaries. Methods: The study has develop a framing analysis as a qualitative methodology in order to examine the information that Pigafetta and Francisco Albo published on their diaries. Results: The main results shows that the frame «hero» has been the most used by Pigafetta. On the other hand, the frame «travel» was the most used by Francisco Albo. Discussion and conclusions: Frames and attributes influence on how public opinion understand and appreciate the figure of Magallanes: Pigafetta’s diary deified the profile of Magallanes, but Francisco Albo’s diary tends to miss out any detail about the figure of this Portuguese navigator and puts his achievements into the background.

Author Biographies

David Varona Aramburu, Loyola Andalucía University

Doctor in Journalism from the Complutense University of Madrid with a thesis on the use of social networks by Spanish journalists. He has a degree in Journalism from the Complutense University, and is also a Master's in International Relations from said university, as well as an Expert in Scientific Communication from the Rey Juan Carlos University of Madrid.

He is currently a professor of Design and Production of Digital Content and Digital Journalism at Loyola Andalucía University. He has been a professor at the Francisco de Vitoria University, where he taught Cyberjournalism and New Digital Products and Communication 2.0 for Dircom. Professor of social networks in the Master's degrees in Production, Radio and Transmedia Reporting at the RTVE Institute and the Complutense and Carlos III universities of Madrid. Professor of social networks (face-to-face and online) at the RTVE Institute. He has also been a professor of Community Management in the Master of Digital Marketing at the Esden Business School.

At the company level, he has been Project Editor-in-Chief of RTVE.es, where he also served as editor-in-chief of Participation and Social Media and as News coordinator. Previously, he has been a New Technologies consultant for FAO in Spain and editor-in-chief of Autopista Online, Motor channel of Terra.es. Linked to the Internet since 1998, he has participated in digital projects such as Recol or Público. He has also collaborated with various media, such as El Mundo or the publishing house Divulga.

Marta Pérez-Escolar, Loyola Andalucía University

She has been a PhD Assistant Professor in the Communication department of the Loyola Andalucía University (Spain), since 2018, in subjects such as ‘Public opinion’ and ‘Issues management’. He obtained the mention of international doctor in Social Sciences and Communication from the Catholic University of Murcia (2017) and, currently, he is also teaching in postgraduate programs such as the MBA Sports Management of the Business Administration department of the Catholic University of Murcia with the 'Bibliographic Searching' module

She is linked to the ‘Quokka research group. Positive Communication and Education Studies' from the Loyola Andalucía University. Her main lines of research are focused on the study of cyber activism, political participation, civic engagement, cyber democracy, collective intelligence, social movements and online protests.

In relation to scientific production, it is worth mentioning book chapters published in prestigious publishers such as IGI Global (No. 116 in foreign SPI with ICEE 0.944) or Tecnos (No. 6 in national SPI with ICEE 34.996); a book with shared authorship that was born from a research project (competitive call) on the economy of participation, as well as articles in high-impact journals such as 'The Information Professional' (JCR) or 'Option' (Q2 in the SCOPUS index He has also carried out several long-term research stays at universities such as the University of Helsinki (Finland), FLACSO Buenos Aires (Argentina) and at the Universidade Lusófona de Lisboa (Portugal).

Gema Sánchez Muñoz, Complutense University of Madrid

She has been an associate professor at the Loyola Andalucía University, where she has taught the subject of Media Planning. She has a degree from the Complutense University in Information Sciences (1999) and a Master's degree in Digital Marketing and Social Media Management from UNED (2014). She began her career by joining CNN + as a programmer in 1999. Later, she was a producer in the Self-Promotion department de Cuatro and since 2010 he has focused his career on the digital environment from the Project Management, New Business and Digital Strategy departments of Yomvi.
