Soñando en público
The publishing house Carena of Barcelona has just published the novel SOÑANDO EN PÚBLICO (DREAMING IN PUBLIC) by journalist Salvador Gómez Valdés. An absorbing story of personal growth (and, in part, also collective) that takes place during the Spanish democratic transition, between the years 1979-1986 and in Radio Nacional de España, where its recently graduated protagonist Ángel del Valle tries to find a niche as an editor of cultural programs. This will allow older readers to remember and younger readers to imagine through Ángel's experiences and youthful eyes some decisive circumstances, such as the attempted coup d'état of 23 F, the successive changes of leadership at Radio Nacional and its consequences depending on the political ups and downs of the time, the rapid evolution of the social role of women in Spain and the inevitable intrigues and friction between co-workers, as well as anecdotes about important literary authors, thinkers, musicians and filmmakers of the time (among them: Jorge Guillén, Borges, Aranguren or José Luis Borau).
A very agile reading, with continuous traits of humor and surprising references to completely forgotten aspects of that mythical era, its author manages to keep the reader in suspense, who gradually realizes that there are things that hardly change over time and others that return to be almost as they were then, resembling too much, unfortunately, to our troubled present of 2024. As the poet Jenaro Talens said at its presentation on October 11, 2024 at La Casa del Libro in Madrid: “It is very well written, offers an accurate picture of the contradictions of the transition and explains much better than other books why we are where we are now”. Let's add that Soñando en Público is read in one sitting, thrills and leaves the reader wanting to know what would happen next.
