Media gatopardism: health portrayals in press, radio and television pre and post-pandemic

Abstract

Introduction: The changes brought about by the pandemic in journalism have been and continue to be widely investigated. However, in the aftermath of the biggest global health crisis for a century, there are hardly any studies in the literature on the evolution of the health representativeness in the media before COVID19. Methodology: A quantitative content analysis was used to review the concept of health in the general press, radio and television with the largest audience in Spain in the periods before and after the pandemic. Results: These media construct health from a mostly biomedical conception to the point of tripling their coverage with respect to information representing social health aspects or lifestyles. The very small variation in the data before and after the pandemic is noteworthy. Discussion: The changes in gatekeeping that accompanied the hardest stage of the pandemic have not been correlated with an evolution in the way of conceiving health. This suggests a deep-rooted biomedical approach to health that has prevented emerging representations such as the health drivers, One Health or global health, which emerged with prominence in COVID19, from gaining a foothold in the literature. Conclusions: After noting a Lampedusian 'gatopardo effect' in post-pandemic health journalism, further research is needed to investigate the causes of the entrenched media hegemony concerning biomedicine and its possible relation with the mistaken social identification between sanitation and health.

Doctor en Investigación de Medios de Comunicación y profesor asociado en el Departamento de Comunicación de la Universidad Carlos III de Madrid. Miembro del equipo de trabajo de proyectos de investigación competitivos nacionales e internacionales sobre periodismo/comunicación y salud, desinformación y alfabetismo mediático. Ha trabajado en medios de comunicación (Cadena SER, CNN+), como responsable de comunicación en AAPP (Agencia Antidroga, Madrid Salud) y como consultor de organizaciones. Autor o coautor de más de 30 publicaciones entre artículos, libros y capítulos de libros. Más de 300 citas e Índice H = 9 en Google Scholar. Fundador y primer editor-jefe de Revista de Comunicación y Salud (2011-2014).

Daniel Catalán-Matamoros , Carlos III University of Madrid

Professor in the Department of Communication at the University Carlos III of Madrid and director of the MediaLab research group. Previously he worked in the field of crisis communication management in international organizations such as the WHO, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, and the Spanish Ministry of Health. Currently, he is a consultant for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and leads several projects on disinformation and fake news. He is president of the Spanish Association of Health Communication and editor-in-chief of the Spanish Journal of Health Communication. Among the signs of quality, he has 3,200 citations, an H = 31 (GS) index, 3 six-year research periods and I3 accreditation.

Laura Gutiérrez Ibañes, Carlos III University of Madrid

Degree in Journalism and PhD in Economics and Institutions from the Complutense University. In the academic field, she has been associate professor of Journalistic Writing at the Complutense University and is currently associate professor of Scientific Journalism and Data Journalism at the Carlos III University of Madrid, and researcher at the Medialab group of the UC3M. In the professional field, she has been responsible for Communication at the Instituto de Salud Carlos III and has worked for almost 25 years as a journalist in the Unidad Editorial group, where she has published around 5,000 journalistic articles in newspapers such as Diario Médico, Expansión and El Mundo. She is currently Director of Communications for the General Council of Pharmaceutical Associations of Spain.
