Abstract

Introduction: Smartphones have become a versatile tool for many audiovisual communicators due to their accessibility, practicality, and cost, as well as the technical and aesthetic possibilities they offer. This research aims to contribute to the understanding of audiovisual production practices with smartphones in four Latin American countries. Methodology: For our analysis, semi-structured interviews were designed and conducted with 18 directors of short films recorded with smartphones from Argentina, Colombia, Mexico, and Peru. Results: The findings provide an overview of audiovisual production with smartphones in four Latin American countries and identify the possibilities and limitations of this mobile device from the perspective, training, and practice of different directors. It also presents a discussion and reflection on its impact on the audiovisual industry in each country. Discussion and Conclusions: It is demonstrated how smartphones have become a great option for audiovisual production and independent productions in Latin America. However, it remains an underestimated tool within the audiovisual industry and higher education in audiovisual training, relegating it to the category of amateur and informal learning.
