Abstract

Introduction: This study analyzes how Basque journalism is adapting to the use of artificial intelligence (AI), with an emphasis on the use of tools like ChatGPT and their influence on the profession. It was developed in collaboration with the Basque Journalists Association (AVP) and aims to understand how AI transforms journalistic work, what opportunities it offers, and what concerns it generates among professionals in the field. Methodology: For data collection, a self-administered semi-structured questionnaire was distributed online, allowing for 504 representative interviews in terms of gender and media diversity. Results: Digital media and independent journalists lead the use of AI, with more than 40% using it weekly, while radio and television have a lower adoption rate. ChatGPT and Canva are the most used tools, although 43.5% of respondents do not use any. The biggest issue is the lack of training, present in 86% of journalists, which limits its equitable integration and deepens gender inequalities. Discussion: The integration of artificial intelligence in Basque journalism represents a significant transformation, with media outlets beginning to explore its use and professionals demanding training, in a context of opportunities and unresolved ethical and professional challenges. Conclusions: The findings highlight the urgency of greater training and improved access to tools to optimize the integration of AI in the journalism sector.
